This post is exclusive to honor the memory of my fallen friend, Jeniviva Mia, who passed away tragically on November 19th in a car accident.

Jeni was a glorious, world renowned Gothic Belly-dancer. I had the honor and privilege of studying the art of Bellydance with her for over a year. She was an incredible, passionate instructor, who touched our lives. As a dancer, she traveled the globe, sharing her gifts and talents with everyone she came across. You could not be in her presence without smiling. An angel on earth, we shall never forget her. Even through the pain of her loss, we can smile, remember and cherish her memory. Rest in peace, darling - until we dance together again.

By now we’ve all heard Rihanna “S&M” hit:

Cause I may be bad- But I’m perfectly good at it… Sex in the air- I don’t care- I love the smell of it… Sticks and stones… May break my bones… But chains and whips excite me…

Well has it piqued your curiosity? Enough to attend a local S&M party?

As a member of the S&M (SadoMasochism) scene in the New York City tri-state area for several years, I have attended hundreds of fetish/BDSM themed parties and events, hosted many and performed at several as well. These gatherings often have their own set of rules based on the venue management, the party producers and the type of crowd in attendance. But, no matter where the party is thrown and who the attendees may be, standard S&M party etiquette is always supposed to be taken into account and respected. So though it may be the first party you attend, even lifetime players follow basic S&M Party Etiquette.

1. Moderate the amount of alcohol you consume: One of the foremost rules of BDSM (Bondage, Dominance, Submission, and Masochism) is to always be safe, sane and consensual. Alcohol can obviously make some individuals careless, and it is important to keep your safety and the safety of others at heart. For example, if you are a submissive and you are into a degree of pain, you might partake in a flogging at an S&M event. If you have had too much to drink, you might not be able to realize it is time to give your Dominant the safety word. Just the opposite applies as well… if you are a Dominant who has had too much to drink, you can severely injure your submissive when engaging in fetish play. If you’ve had too much to drink, have a friend escort you home. Illegal or prescription drugs should never be used when engaging in S&M play or attending a scene party.

2. Be polite at all times: Don’t interrupt people or couples who are engaging in S&M play. Unless it is an interactive stage show, many individuals might take offense to an interruption of any kind, whether it is questions, comments, or vulgar statements regarding the type of play taking place. Simply wait until their “scene” is over before approaching. A public scene is an invitation to watch, not to join in or volunteer. Also, it is wise to ask the Dominant for permission to speak with the submissive in order to establish possible “ownership” or lack thereof. Respect the space the event is held in, and definitely respect all the guests.

3. Stay in your lane: A collared submissive should not be approached to play under any circumstances. More often than not, this means that they are in attendance with their Owner. If a collared submissive approaches you, it is wise to ask if they are owned. They may just be wearing a collar in advance preparation for a scene they desire to occur with a Dominant they meet on premises, or even as a fashion statement. In any event, it is always wise to be sure.

4. Ask before you touch: Never use someone’s property without asking permission first! Although an S&M event is a public gathering for like-minded individuals, that doesn’t mean we all like to share. This applies to fetish toys & equipment (floggers, ropes, cuffs, paddles, blindfolds, etc.) as well as people (submissives, slaves, etc.). A powerful Dominant may be giving an OTK (over the knee) spanking to a lovely submissive at the fetish event you are attending. That does not give anyone the right to also spank this person once their scene is over. You must always ask permission. It also doesn’t hurt to get to know someone before engaging in S&M play. Trust is something that is established over time. Be courteous as well. No means no, and if someone tells you no, there’s no reason to be rude about it.

5. Dress the part: When attending a Fetish Event or S&M Play Party, it helps if you dress in play-appropriate attire. Jeans and sneakers are usually unacceptable. If you don’t have fetish clothing (leather, rubber, latex, lace, PVC, vinyl, stilettos, thigh-highs, lingerie, corsets, theme attire: nurse/nun/school teacher), you can, at the very least, dress nicely and sexy in all black. But, I have to admit, the more fetish and S&M themed clothing being worn at an event, the better the energy in the room!

6. Know what you’re getting into: Most S&M clubs and private parties are generally composed of at least two spaces – one for socializing and another for play. Make a note of which is which when you enter the space and try to respect these boundaries. You might experience or witness, at an S&M event, many things you have never expected, and either you will deal with these things well and learn, or you won’t. Some examples are: a Dominant verbally humiliating his or her submissive, same sex play partners, or a submissive crying during a rough punishment scene. These things are normal at an S&M play party. If you become too disturbed by this, simply stop watching. There are things you’re into that others may not be, and vice versa. It is good to come into a play party with an open mind, too.

7. Be Discreet: Discretion is incredibly important in the BDSM community. If you become involved in this lifestyle, it is up to you to protect those involved. Many individuals that attend S&M events lead very “vanilla” lives. If you notice one of these people in the street outside of an S&M event, it is wise not to approach them until you know it is alright with the other person to discuss the scene with his/her friends and associates. Be discrete. Usually you will realize it if they make an effort not to be noticed, and it is your job to respect their privacy and confidentiality.

This may seem like a lot to swallow, and it’s also on the serious side of my usual writing style. I simply feel that anyone who decides to go play in public and join the S&M community needs to be aware of common etiquette. An S&M play party can be incredibly fun and exhilarating, and there is no need to be afraid about attending. Some things you can only learn through experience.

The word “vivisection” means experimental surgery conducted on live animals and other organisms, and human vivisection has been perpetrated as a form of torture. Ugh! Let’s face it, not too appetizing. However, none of that violence was in evidence last week when I attended the party called ViVisection. Even better, it was held at The Laugh Lounge on the Lower East Side. No, there weren’t actually that many laughs, but there was plenty of fashion and sexy scenesters.

A fashion show was being held downstairs with models displaying lots of Summer Flesh, the subtitle of this party. Many of the 10 or so contestants (who were both male and female with all different body types), were decked out in black, but there were definitely bright colors sprinkled in, accessorized by decorative face markings, dyed dreads and eerie white contact lenses. The fashions were supplied by the notorious evangelist of latex, the Baroness, as well as designer Isabelle Batz, who was showcasing her glitz and glam casualwear.

Little colorful hats were provided by Venus Alers, who makes headgear under the name Mad Hatter. She was in the show herself, wearing a magenta wig with a flowered headdress and a black satin corset, accentuated by exotic makeup. “My mother won,” she told me after the show was over. “Her name’s Iris.” Like mother, like daughter. The two resembled one another, both curvy figured, and the mother was wearing a similar outfit in black.

What’s always surprising in the dark and goth scene is you’d expect people to be cold and standoffish, but au contraire, wearing punk and vampire freak attire keeps ’em friendly. For example, bubbly nightlife personality Lindsay Lowe, a judge, was decorated like a toy shop, in pinks and yellows, with numerous child-like costume jewelry hanging from her every surface.

“How do you decide what to wear?” I asked the host and party producer, Vulcanus Lévi, a dandy who’s normally attired in a costume made of peacock feathers when I see him at parties around town, in particular On Top at Le Bain. Tonight was no exception, but instead of his usual green and turquoise plumage, tonight he was decked out in white feathers with white face makeup. “I wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and recreate my dreams,” he told me with the hint of an accent.

He was standing with Celso, another of the judges, who herself was dressed elegantly in black. Party animal and performer Kayvon Zand was seated in the lounge, wearing black feathers and one of the shades missing from his sunglasses. All in black with a chain hanging from her nose, Kim De’ville was speaking to her admirers in the lounge. Although the paintings were impressionistic and fractured mixed media paintings, they matched her pose and mood. “Happy birthday,” said a few friends coming by to kiss her.

After a couple of gin and tonics, carefully stepping over the human carpet at the bar, I said a few parting words to a woman dressed in Marie Antoinette drag, with a white peruke wig and gold satin ensemble, who handed me her card. Her name was LadyZombie, a professional singer, model, dominatrix and writer. I read aloud her fitting quote. “A dark, consuming passion burns eternally within the depths of my eyes. Prepare to have your very life force rocked to its core.” I wasn’t sure about my life force, but I definitely was thinking about buying some new clothes.

Infernal greetings my sexxxy demons, friends and family!

Fashion influence is everywhere we look, and so much of modern style is derived from bygone days. A lot of people often ask me where I shop, where I got the ideas for my looks, etc., so I have decided to share a little with you! Once a week (or whenever I remember to do this, lol) I'll post a note that contains photos of some of my fashion inspirations.

For the first installment, I'd like to discuss some of my major influences. Those who know me best know that I never stick within a specific genre of attire. Who want to limit themselves to JUST Goth? JUST Fetish? JUST Urban? Can't I have box braids and extensions one day, my curly black mane on this night, and cyber locks another? Of course I can. Anyone can! I love to indulge myself in a creative blend of ALL the styles I enjoy.

My closet is definitely a corporate drone's nightmare and a drag queen's heaven.

I often find myself drawing upon the various styles of: Marilyn Manson, Dita Von Teese, Bettie Page, Gwen Stefani, Shirley Manson, Siouxsie Sioux, Madonna, Stevie Nicks, Lita Ford, many more celebrities and MOST of all... the NYC Subculture! The underground is where I found the courage to be creative and experimental. In all of YOU is where I first learned to say, "Let 'em stare!" - and ENJOY the shock value and edgy confidence.

I'd like to first showcase Madonna, specifically during the 80s, when bold makeup, elaborate hair and pounds of heavy accessories were glorified. Yes, I confess, I still think this was one of the best times for clothes! And I am not talking about shoulder pads (armor is one thing, but unnecessary padding... no) and men with bangs (I do love long hair on men - but no bangs, please). Over the decades of her career, Madonna has changed looks more often than I can count, and she always seems to do it so well - but I loved her style most of all in the beginning. Clunky bracelets, heavy chains, dark red lipstick, smouldering eyes... YES - I do this look ALL the time! She puts her sexuality on a pedestal, drips confidence, and her fashion sense reflects that clearly.

I would also like to make mention of someone from the NYC subculture whose outrageous makeup and styles have been an inspiration to MANY of us since the Limelight club was in its prime: Miss Venus Pain. Known best for her wild stage shows and hat/hair/makeup designs, Venus originated many of the styles now common place in our community. A black light Goddess, she is able to incorporate any electric color and fabric into a Club Kid's fantasy! Many of her looks are done from scratch, and I strive to be as unique and capable as she is one day. We owe her a lot - she paved the way for us! Thank you, Miss Pain - we love you and appreciate your contributions!

I'd like to wrap up by touching on a designer that I am completely infatuated with currently - and most of you share the same sick obsession. IRON FIST CLOTHING! Well, not all their clothes so much as - say it with me now - their SHOES! Specifically, the line of monster inspired platform heels they have out now. I own the Wolfbeaters and the Zombie Stompers (as well as the turquoise leopard print heels, but those were from a different series). They are perfect for any edgy, horror loving diva or rockabilly fashionista! I vote these shoes a MUST HAVE - however, they aren't terribly comfortable. If you don't mind some aches and pains, it's completely worth it.

Like a cancer out of remission, there you are again, rearing your ugly hear and shouting obscenities, and same as before, I laugh and shrug you off, because you have no effect on me. In fact, you do. I pity you.

I pity the miles you will always walk alone, smoldering in your own hatred, wasting years of your life with bitterness stuck between your teeth, seething in self-loathing. An endless cycle of problems you create for yourself, breeding them out of your own cunt, straddling and fucking a huge smorgasbord of bad ideas, left to wallow in the dust of your own destruction.

You are simply the mosquito bite itch that annoys until scratched bloody, only to scab and heal, fall away, until the next time. If anything, I certainly tire of you. Those closest to me heave great sighs of dismay at your very presence, at the mention of your name, at the sound of your voice… a cancer to us all.

Years should heal, but in your own malicious intent, your pain grows, your anger grows, and one day you might look up and see the truth… that life has gone on without you. There is such beauty, bounty and greatness in this life, and I only hope that you shove your hanging eyeballs back into their bleeding sockets to seek out and find your own, where perhaps you will not be discarded like so much rotten fruit.

It's amazing how the past several years of my life, and the lives of so many of my friends, were so greatly affected by LOST - the ABC show that proves TV doesn't always have to rot your brain. And now, it's time to say goodbye.

This past Sunday, May 23rd, 2010, Ali and I threw a LOST: Series Finale party at our home in New York City.

In attendance were some of the greatest LOST junkies I know: Gary, Heka, JM Draven, David M., and LaMorta. Also, two recent inductees into the circle: Dave and Tempest. The nine of us were prepared to indulge in an evening of decadence and bad ass TV drama.

RANDOM "LOST" SITUATION THAT WILL NEVER BE EXPLAINED #1: The Dharma Shark. Okay, so you give it to us once when the raft blows up, and then only once more at the opening of the first episode of the last season. COME ON!!! Were the Dharma Initiative testing on sharks? Why did it have a Dharma stamp on it's ass? I genuinely wanted to know. But now, never. Argh.

Having a house full of fanatics of any kind is usually eventful (if not dangerous), but I think we were all too wrapped up in the drama, the romance, the time-traveling and the random supernatural occurrences on the show that the only trouble we could cause were our own individual headaches.

RANDOM "LOST" SITUATION THAT WILL NEVER BE EXPLAINED #2: The Egyptian Temple. The hieroglyphics that appeared when Locke stopped typing in the numbers (4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42) and pushing the damn button in the hatch. The glyph of Anubis summoning The Black Smoke. How did any of this really fit in?

Trying to process all the twists and turns throughout the six seasons of LOST wasn't easy (ever), but it was incredibly interesting, fascinating, thought provoking and heartbreaking.

When Charlie drowned, we were devastated. When the freighter exploded, and Sun screamed Jin's name in horror, we cringed from her agony. When we learned about Jacob and the MiB, we howled in confusion. When Hurley finally remembered Libby, we cheered for him. They were apart of us, somehow.

Then, of course, there were The Others... and how can we forget... The Other Others...

Most of us were sad that Mr. Eko didn't make an appearance in the finale. However, Vincent the Golden Retriever, played a pivotal role in the closing scene. So, they went for the dog and not the man. Okay. Fine. I'll except that.

We did discuss that we all assumed, in the beginning, that Walt had some sort of telekinetic ability, or astral projection of some kind. I mean, didn't YOU think that he summoned the original Polar Bears out of that Spanish comic book? I did. We don't hear about the Polar Bear cages until MUCH later. I understand why he was written out of the story. I mean, a ten year old should not grow to be 6 feet tall in the 90 days they were "on the island."

RANDOM "LOST" SITUATION THAT WILL NEVER BE EXPLAINED #3: Ben obviously had the ability to summon The Black Smoke earlier in the series. Why did he lose this ability, and when? How did he have it in the first place? And, again... that room in his closet was covered in hieroglyphics. Que sera, sera.

All in all, I think it was awesome that Desmond decided to use his "powers" to show his island friends that they were now existing in a purgatory of sorts, dealing with some of the issues they had faced in life, and ultimately reuniting with those they loved best and experienced the most with.

In closing, I will leave you with a RANDOM "LOST" FACT: If you weren't aware, the sound that The Black Smoke makes is the same sound as a NYC Taxi Cab printing a receipt (this was even admitted by the producers on a Special Features disc from one of the LOST box sets). Heka proved this by recording the sound in a Taxi the day after the LOST finale.

A Meal, Some Wolves & Manhattan

At this point, most of us in “the lifestyle” comprehend what Valentine’s Day is based on originally, before it became something marketable, anyway. A day based on a Saint’s beheading for performing the rights of marriage to Roman soldiers. Lovely, isn’t it?

I think so… I think it’s a macabre holiday, and I enjoy that most people aren’t aware of it.

Although the whole “flowers and candy” thing is nice in its own right, I always loved something a bit unique. I can always count on Ali to make any day special. This past Valentine’s Day was no exception.

I got dressed Sunday afternoon with absolutely no clue as to what Ali had planned. In the years we have been together, I usually make the plans… so this was, to say the least, rather exciting and unusually mysterious, even for him.

Once out of the house, already feeling nice from a few glasses of the Italian strawberry liquor I’d gotten us the night before inside our systems, he lead the way to our first destination… True Blue Tattoo. He proceeded to procure a new ball for one of my earrings (the other had gone missing some time ago) from the artists working there that day. I found it very thoughtful of Ali to remember that I needed a replacement.

As you know, I’m a Leo, and Leos like to know what’s going on at all times. I couldn’t stop asking where we were going next, and the only reason I acquired this information was because my darling couldn’t remember how to get to the local theater. We haven’t gone to a movie in a while, so I was extremely pleased.

Ali purchased our tickets to The Wolfman, and we had drinks and a meal at Chili’s until the time our flick was due to start. Being a holiday, the theater house was packed, and we had to sit pretty close to the front. Let’s just say that at that distance from the screen, the gore and transformation sequences were exhilarating!

We went home to thaw out, since the evening was significantly colder than the afternoon, and I gave Ali his presents. A Wolfman figurine from Forbidden Planet and a hardcover of the graphic novel version of Guilty Pleasures, both of which he loved. Ali isn’t an easy one to shop for, since he requires nothing, but I like when I make the right choice for him!

He snuck a phone call in the bathroom for the address of our next stop… Sin Sin Lounge in Manhattan where SNOG was being held that evening. Everyone we knew there dispersed quickly for the Vampire Ball, and we ventured to St. Marks Place for a few more drinks at the Irish Pub before calling it a night.

All in all, it was a wonderful day, full of wonderful surprises. Thank you, Ali. I had a great time, and I love you dearly!

Prejudice in the East Village

The East Village of New York City, and more specifically the street Saint Marks Place, has been an icon of the underground world as far back as I can remember. Even as a little girl, I used to wander the area with my father and marvel at all of the fascinating stores and more so, the strange and beautiful people. I would later grow up to become a figure in their community, known as the Goth scene. Time changes everything, though, and now so many places that were familiar to us are no more.

Last night, it was my fiancé Ali’s birthday, and we headed towards Saint Marks Place and 3rd Avenue to stop by a bar called The Continental, where we had gone with a large group of my rather corporate coworkers only 6 days prior, and where we have visited dozens of times over the years, alone, together, and with plenty of our friends. The Continental is infamous as a rock and roll bar, incredible drink deals and a boisterous patronage. We were dressed as usual, in a lot of leather, and had our IDs out and ready. The next few minutes would prove to be degrading, infuriating and outrageous, to say the least.

The bouncer looked at my ID, and refused to look at Ali’s ID as well, stating, “You do not have a shirt on, so I can’t let you in.” Specifically, Ali was clad in leather pants, leather boots, a leather corset that stops directly underneath his pectorals, and a leather motorcycle jacket. Ali and I exchanged an inquisitive look, and he said to the bouncer, “I was wearing the exact same outfit in here last week, but I can zip up my jacket, it isn’t a problem.” You would think that would appease the bouncer, but he went on to say something that proved his personal prejudice towards us went beyond dress code.

“I know, and I wasn’t so sure I should let you in last week, either. Your look is too extreme for this place,” he declared, making a point to refuse eye contact with either of us. I laughed, utterly astonished, and told the man it was Ali’s birthday. Ali was still holding his ID out to the bouncer, who finalized his judgment by saying, “I am not looking at that, and you’re not getting in here tonight.”

That is accurately, word for word, what was said to us. I recall it vividly, because I have never before been so deeply upset by such a blatant display of injustice inflicted upon some I love dearly. How could this, the bar where Iggy Pop has been a patron, along with countless other famous rockers and those of the alternative society, refuse entry to us? We diplomatically walked away and went elsewhere.

So I ask you now, what has become of the East Village? What has become of Saint Marks Place? How can a rock and roll bar turn away the very people that helped make it what it is today? Prejudice in the East Village… I would have never thought it possible. Thus, I wanted to bring this to your attention, along with a quote from Mr. Franklin Thomas: "One day our descendants will think it incredible that we paid so much attention to things like the amount of melanin in our skin or the shape of our eyes or our gender instead of the unique identities of each of us as complex human beings."
